Demandar la libertad: esclavitud, justicia y manumisión ante la Real Audiencia de Canarias (1784-1826)

Abstract

La Real Audiencia de Canarias, a través de sus expedientes judiciales, atestigua la presencia, las condiciones de vida y la lucha por la libertad de los esclavos del archipiélago a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX. Esta documentación no solo refleja los cauces por los que las personas sometidas a la servidumbre intentaban alcanzar su libertad, sino que también evidencia la caducidad de las relaciones amo-esclavo en las islas. Muchos de estos individuos se presentarían ante el tribunal solicitando su rescate ante la mala situación en la que vivirían y, aunque el tribunal no se entromete en las circunstancias denunciadas, intenta dirimir las causas y el origen último de la esclavitud, probablemente promoviendo la manumisión de estas personas a través de la compra de su propia libertad.

The Real Audiencia of the Canary Islands, through its judicial records, bears witness to the presence, living conditions, and struggle for freedom of the archipelago’s enslaved population at the end of the 18th cen-tury and the beginning of the 19th century. This documentation not only reflects the channels through which those subjected to servitude sought to attain their freedom, but also reveals the decline of master-slave relations on the islands. Many of these individuals would appear before the court requesting their emancipation due to the poor conditions in which they lived, and although the court did not intervene directly in the reported circumstances, it sought to determine the causes and ultimate origins of their enslavement, likely promoting their manumission through the purchase of their own freedom
