Resumen: When renewable energy sources are added to power systems, the lower number of conventional generating units may result in a loss of system control capabilities, such as voltage and frequency control, and a decrease in the spinning reserve and total inertia of the system. Because small isolated power systems typically have a weakly meshed grid, stability can be seriously affected when a large amount of renewable energy is fed into the grid, particularly in squirrel cage induction generator wind turbines. Adding a battery energy storage system (BESS) to a small isolated power system could help mitigate this problem. Calculating the critical clearing time (CCT) through dynamic analysis illustrates how adding a BESS to such a system can improve the integration of power from renewable sources.
