dc.description.abstractHypocalcemia is a condition observed in ruminants, characterized by a decrease in blood calcium levels following parturition, due to the onset of lactation. This disorder can have severe consequences for animal health, presenting neurological and motor dysfunctions that may ultimately lead to death. While hypocalcemia has been extensively studied in cattle, there remain gaps in the knowledge regarding its manifestation in sheep. To enhance understanding of this condition in sheep and to provide useful data for its prevention and treatment, a study was conducted on the Canarian sheep breed, which is known for its high milk production potential. Calcium levels were monitored in five sheep, from 48 hours before parturition to 96 hours postpartum, to assess fluctuations during the periparturient period. The construction of a peripartum calcium curve for the Canarian sheep breed offers valuable insight into the prevention of puerperal hypocalcemia and may contribute to improved health and productivity in dairy sheep managementen_US
