Batería de San Juan y Mesas de San Juan (Gran Canaria): Arqueología de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Canarias

Abstract

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la tentación belicista del régimen franquista y el consiguiente riesgo de pérdida de Gibraltar estuvieron a punto de provocar la ocupación del archipiélago por fuerzas británicas. Para afrontar este riesgo se llevó a cabo un importante esfuerzo defensivo en las islas, que incluyó la construcción de baterías como la de Mesas de San Juan y la reutilización de otras como la de San Juan. El estudio de estas baterías, desde la perspectiva de la arqueología del conflicto, ha supuesto un reto. Los riesgos de desvirtuar su significado bajo intervenciones agresivas obligan a repensar la manera en que tradicionalmente nos hemos acercado al patrimonio militar

During World War II, the warlike temptation of the Francoist regime and the subsequent risk of losing Gibraltar nearly led to the occupation of the archipelago by British forces. To address this risk, a significant defensive effort was made on the islands, which included the construction of batteries such as the one at Mesas de San Juan and the reutilization of others like the one at San Juan. From conflict archaeology view, the study of these batteries has become a challenge. The risks of distorting their meaning through aggressive interventions force us to rethink the way we have traditionally approached military heritage.
