El gobernador de Gran Canaria y juez de la Real Audiencia de Canarias don Agustín de Zurbarán

Abstract

El licenciado Agustín de Zurbarán, de origen vasco, llegó a Gran Canaria a fines del primer tercio del siglo XVI y tiene el mérito de haber sido el principal impulsor del urbanismo en la ciudad de Las Palmas en aquella centuria. Fue oidor de la Audiencia de Canarias, juez de residencia y gobernador de la isla, y durante su estancia en la misma se vio envuelto en distintas circunstancias que influyeron en su labor como gran patricio de la república.

The lawyer Agustín de Zurbarán, of Basque origin, arrived in Gran Canaria at the end of the first third of the 16th century and has to his credit having been the main promoter of urban planning in the city of Las Palmas in that century. He was a judge of the Audiencia de Canarias, resident judge and governor of the island, and during his stay there he was involved in different circumstances that affected his work as a great patrician of the republic.
