La crítica del neocolonialismo y el replanteamiento de la identidad colectiva en Papeles de Pandora (1976)

Abstract

La literatura puertorriqueña del siglo XX se ocupó de definir la identidad nacional en un contexto histórico marcado por el trasvase de poderes entre España y Estados Unidos. Como respuesta a los intentos de asimilación cultural extranjera, los escritores de la primera mitad del siglo XX trataron de delimitar cuáles eran los elementos constitutivos del imaginario nacional puertorriqueño. Sin embargo, en la segunda mitad del siglo se desarrolló una literatura que puso en evidencia las carencias que presentaba la definición de lo puertorriqueño que habían realizado las generaciones previas. Entre las voces que reclamaron un cambio en la literaturapuertorriqueña destaca la de Rosario Ferré. Esta investigación se centra en once de los cuentos que forman parte de su primera obra, Papeles de Pandora (1976), con el objetivo de analizar las similitudes y diferencias que se establecen en torno a la cuestión colonial y la definición de la identidad colectiva que habían teorizado los representantes del nacionalismo cultural en la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Twentieth-century Puerto Rican literature was concerned with defining national identity in a historical context marked by the transfer of power between Spain and the United States. In response to attempts at foreign cultural assimilation, writers in the first half of the 20th century tried to delimit the constituent elements of the Puerto Rican national imaginary. However, the second half of the century saw the development of a literature that highlighted the shortcomings of the definition of Puerto Rico that had been proposed by previous generations. Among the voices that called for a change in Puerto Rican literature was Rosario Ferré. This research focuses on eleven of the stories that form part of her first work, Papeles de Pandora (1976), with the aim of analysing the similarities and differences established around the colonial question and the definition of collective identity that had been theorised by the representatives of cultural nationalism in the first half of the 20th century.
