| dc.description.abstract | The effective transfer of scientific knowledge to society is essential for addressing pressing challenges related to ocean health and sustainability. This study explores the role of Ocean Literacy (OL) as a driver for informed public engagement and sustainable decision-making, with specific attention to the Canary Islands. The research combines a review of international and regional educational strategies with an analysis of survey data on ocean perceptions among residents of the Canary Islands. Results indicate varying levels of self-assessed ocean knowledge across provinces and education levels, as well as differences in trust in scientific information and awareness of international initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). The findings highlight the importance of multi-actor educational strategies, the integration of local knowledge and the need for inclusive approaches to foster equitable access to ocean science. This work underscores the relevance of OL as a tool to empower society, promote blue justice, and support the sustainable management of marine resources. | en_US |
