Abstract: In this work we revise the evolution of the first period of radio broadcasting in the Canary Islands, from the first emitting stations to the beginning of the Civil War. It also comprises the analysis of the main regulatory milestones, as well as the social and economic circumstances that accompanied the implantation of this new mass-media in the archipelago. To accomplish this study, it is also necessary to explore both national and international context and technical limitations. Finally, we study the social implantation of this medium in the islands, taking into account not only the number of listeners, but also the commercializing companies with presence on the islands and their impact on the canary newspapers.
