Vencer o Atlântico e ascender socialmente: os minhotos na Bahia (século XVII)

Abstract

In this paper we analyse the trajectory of men who left Ponte de Lima, in the north of Portugal, and headed for Bahia, the capital of the South American colony, crossing and making a life on the other side of the Atlantic, manuscript sources from the local Misericórdia archive, which we have analysed qualitatively. With very similar life journeys, although with several differences, these men achieved what they wanted, leading a path of social ascent, made up of work and professional networks and trust. Once they had crossed the Atlantic and achieved success, they planned to distribute their wealth distribution of their wealth, benefiting family, friends and the poor.

Neste trabalho analisamos a trajetória dos homens que saíram de Ponte de Lima, no Norte de Portugal, e rumaram à Bahia, a capital da colónia sul-americana, atravessando e fazendo vida no outro lado do Atlântico, servindo-nos de fontes manuscritas existentes no arquivo da Misericórdia local, as quais analisamos qualitativamente. Com percursos de vida muito semelhantes, embora com várias diferenças, estes homens alcançaram o que desejaram, protagonizando um percurso de ascensão social, feito de trabalho e de redes profissionais e de confiança. Vencido o Atlântico e alcançado o sucesso, perspetivaram a distribuição do seu património, beneficiando familiares, amigos e pobres.
