El vulcanismo en Canarias

Abstract

Al desarrollar la Historia Geológica de España, y al hablar del vulcanismo, destacan las Islas Canarias, no sólo por la importancia que esta actividad ha tenido y tiene en ellas, sino también por constituir uno de los archipiélagos de origen volcánico mejor estudiado del mundo, junto al de Hawai. Por otra parte, las Canarias han suscitado gran interés entre los investigadores, en el campo de la Geología, debido a diversos factores. Por todo ello no es de extrañar que, ya desde el siglo XVIII, los más prestigiosos científicos, de cada época, hayan trabajado en estas islas, entre los que puede destacarse las figuras de Charles Lyell, Leopold von Buch, Alexander von Humboldt, etc.

If one looks at the Geological History of Spain and talks about volcanism, reference to Canary Islands is inevitable, not only because volcanic activity has and still does play an important role on the Islands, but also because they form one of the best studied volcanic archipelagos in the world, second only to Hawaii. Furthermore, the Canary Islands have roused great interest among Geology researchers for several reasons. Therefore it is no wonder that the leading scientists of each era, including figures as renowned as Charles Lyell, Leopold von Buch, Alexander von Humboldt, etc., have worked on these islands ever since the 18th Century.
