Desde Tenerife con nostalgia: cartas de Hermann Wildpret a Haeckel (1901-1908)

Abstract

El darwinista alemán Ernst Haeckel realizó una épica subida al Teide en noviembre de 1866 acompañado por el suizo Hermann Wildpret, jardinero del Jardín Botánico de La Orotava y el personaje más popular en Tenerife entre los naturalistas y viajeros europeos que visitaron la isla en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Unos cuarenta años después, rememorando aquella aventura, Wildpret escribió varias cartas a Haeckel que se dan ahora a conocer en español analizando sus contenidos. Integradas en el epistolario haeckeliano y en el contexto de la literatura de viajes, entre múltiples aspectos sacan a la luz vicisitudes de Wildpret e interesantes relaciones entre naturalistas, académicos y destacados personajes germanoparlantes que visitaron Canarias en las postrimerías decimonónicas.

The German Darwinist Ernst Haeckel undertook an epic climb to the Peak of Tenerife in November 1866. He was accompanied by the Swiss Hermann Wildpret, gardener of the Botanic Garden of La Orotava and the most popular character in Tenerife among European naturalists and travelers who visited the island in the latter half of the 19th century. Some forty years later, recalling that adventure, Wildpret wrote several letters to Haeckel, now published in Spanish, with analysis of their contents. Integrated into the Haeckel’s correspondence and in the context of travel literature, they depict Wildpret’s vicissitudes and interesting relationships among German-speaking naturalists, academics and prominent personalities who visited the Canary Islands in the late 19th century.
