Juan de León y Castillo e infraestructuras en Canarias durante la Segunda Globalización. Un balance historiográfico

Abstract

La presente publicación parte de la dicotomía «desarrollo de las infraestructuras-crecimiento económico» como un hecho innegable, apreciando la evolución de la economía canaria desde la perspectiva de larga duración. Resulta muy importante prestar atención a la figura del ingeniero Juan de León y Castillo, quien promovió la modernización de las infraestructuras en el Archipiélago, contribuyendo al crecimiento de la economía insular en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Los resultados del balance historiográfico detectan que los académicos han prestado bastante atención a Juan de León y Castillo, la relación de la Ley de los Puertos Francos, la construcción del Puerto de La Luz, el crecimiento urbano, los ciclos agroalimenticios para combatir el subdesarrollo de las islas y la posición de los puertos canarios a nivel internacional. Sin embargo, se han detenido en menor escala en puertos menores y carreteras, las islas no-capitalinas, la conectividad interna de las islas, las comunicaciones urbanas, correos, telégrafos, y la electricidad.

This publication is based on the «infrastructure development-economic growth» dichotomy as an undeniable fact, appreciating the evolution of the Canarian economy from a long-term perspective. It is highly important to pay attention to the figure of the engineer Juan de León y Castillo, who promoted the modernization of infrastructure in the Archipelago, contributing to the growth of the island economy in the second half of the 19th century. The results of the historiographical balance detect that scholars have dedicated a lot of study to Juan de León y Castillo, the relationship of the Free Ports Law, the construction of the Port of La Luz, urban growth, the agri-food cycles to combat the underdevelopment of the islands and the position of the Canarian ports at an international level. However, it has stopped on a smaller scale in minor ports and roads, the non-capital islands, the internal connectivity of the islands, urban communications, post offices, telegraphs, and electricity.
