Poder aristocrático y género en la conquista y colonización Canarias: Beatriz de Bobadilla, gran señora de las islas

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the Canarian soci- ety during the process of European expansion across the Atlantic ocean in the fifteenth cen- tury, when the islands were the last frontier of the kingdom of Castile. The controversial per- sonality of Beatriz de Bobadilla was essential in that period, when she ruled several of the islands because of her successive marriages, first with the lord of La Gomera and El Hierro and before with the governor of the island of Tenerife. The study offers a documentary analysis of her figure, trying to deconstruct the negative image made by traditional historiog- raphy, with the goal of understand her facts in its context.

Este trabajo supone una aproximación al análisis de la sociedad canaria en el marco del proceso de expansión europea por el Atlántico, momento en el que las islas constituyeron la última frontera del reino de Castilla. La controvertida figura de Beatriz de Bobadilla fue clave en las décadas finales del siglo XV y los primeros años del XVI, cuando gobernó varias de las islas a raíz de sus sucesivos matrimonios con el señor de La Gomera y El Hierro y el gobernador de la isla de Tenerife. En las páginas que siguen se ofrece un análisis documental de su figura, tratando de deconstruir la imagen negativa que la historiografía tradicional ha trazado sobre ella y de ubicarla en el contexto espacio-temporal, social y de género para comprender en toda su dimensión muchas de sus decisiones.
