Abstract: In this article, the authors explain the real situation of schools in the Canary Islands during the Illustration, a movement whose main purpose was to provide education to the population. As it happened in other aspects, this was in fact a reason why the initiative did not work and the majority of the people, mainly the popular classes, and especially women, did not have access to education, thus being kept apart from intellectual lite. The article includes maps of the places that had a schoolhouse (when data are available) in an attempt to explain the reasons for this movement, always bearing in mind the existing social and economic structure as well as the implication of the different powers in these aspects.
Dans cet article, les auteurs referent la situation réelle de l’enseignement public aux Canarie pandant I’llustration. Ce movement, don’t le but, parmi d’autres choses était celui de proportionner de l’instruction publique â la population a résulté dans un échec, car la plupart de la conlectivité n’avait aucun accés á l’education, notamment les classes populaires et spécialment les femmes qui étaient écartés de la via intalectuelle. Les auteurs présentent aussi des mappes des localités qui avalent des écoles (quand l’information est disponible) ei qui nous permetient de comprendra la raison d’être de ce mouvement, par rapport aux structures socio-économiques existantes et l’implication des different pouvoirs dans cet aspect.
