The Canary Islands is both the first European sun and beach tourism destination and the most important destination in Europe for whale watching, according to the number of tourists who annually carry out the activity. From the different islands of the archipelago, whale-watching tours are organised to observe about 29 species of whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans identified in the Canary waters. This study analyses the profile of tourists who carried out whale watching in two of the main islands of the archipelago where the activity takes place, i.e., Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Results reveal that there are significant differences between tourists who did the activity in the two island-destinations concerning motivations, interests and opinions about whale-watching management. These findings will allow to designing personalised management strategies based on consumer characteristics and preferences on each island, aiming to contribute to whale protection and the sustainability of the whale-watching sector in the Canary Islands.
