The modern port model in Morocco was first took shape during the Protectorate (1912–1956), as the occupying powers of Spain and France set up a programme to modernize the transport and communications systems, in which the ports played a major role. However, the French model, revolving around the hegemonic port of Casablanca, which underwent considerable development, could be clearly distinguished from the ports in the area under Spanish control, as Spain preferred to boost the ports of Ceuta and Melilla.en_US
