Los recursos minerales y su explotación en el Sahara Occidental, 1942-1975

Abstract

Al finalizar la Guerra Civil, el Gobierno español impulsó una serie de campañas de investigación geológica en el Sahara Occidental utilizando para ello el Instituto Nacional de Industria y el Servicio Minero y Geológico de la Dirección General de Marruecos y Colonias. Estas campañas dieron como resultado el descubrimiento de fosfatos y hierro. En el texto mantengo que la investigación y posterior explotación, en el caso de los fosfatos, estuvo relacionada más con fines políticos que económicos.

At the end of the Civil War, the Spanish government launched a series of geological research campaigns in Western Sahara through the National Institute of Industry and the Mining and Geological Service attached to the General Directorate of Morocco and the Colonies. These campaigns resulted in the discovery of phosphates and iron. In this article, I argue that the investigation and subsequent exploitation, in the case of phosphates, was more related to political purposes than to economic ones.
