The concept of beach carrying capacity has been used many times since the decade of 1960. Two variables are derived from it: the available beach surface for each user and the beach zoning. Traditionally two techniques have been used for this purpose: aerial images analysis and questionnaires to the users. This study is a first approximation to the carrying capacity at Las Canteras beach from the analysis of 10 aerial vertical photographs dated between 2005 and 2013. In each image five categories were identified: users on foot/bathers; users on their towel; users lying on a hammock; empty towels and empty hammocks. The total number of users on the beach range between 700 and 3966 for the different images. From the spatial distribution of users, the beach was divided in three sectors parallel to the shoreline according to Yepes (1992): open spaces area, resting area and active area. Assuming a surface of 5 m2 /user, the maximum possible number of users on the beach would as much as 14.500 people if they completely occupy the resting area and the open space area.en_US
