Resumen: Aquaculture, probably the fastest growing food-producing sector, now accounts for nearly 50 percent of the world's food fish. Different infectious diseases that can decrease the final production, often affect intensive farms. To control this situation, several antibiotics are frequently used with known environmental consequences. The aim of this study was to analyse a strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens isolated from wastewater samples collected from the farms, for use as probiotics in aquaculture. The strain was evaluated in vitro through various mechanisms of selection, such as the production of antagonistic effects against pathogens, adhesion to the intestinal mucus, competition for nutrients or binding site, and growth in intestinal mucus and in vivo by performing a challenge. Therefore, in conclusion we consider B. amyloliquefaciens isolate from wastewater samples collected from the farms as a good candidate probiotic in the prevention of the infection by Vibrio anguillarum in European sea bass after in vitro and biosafety assays.
