Abstract: El creciente aumento de la prevalencia de la heridas crónicas y de difícil manejo en la población en los últimos años ha suscitado la búsqueda y el estudio de las diferentes alternativas de tratamiento existentes para el manejo de esta afección. La plata se ha postulado como un agente eficaz para el tratamiento de heridas de este tipo por su capacidad antimicrobiana y por su baja toxicidad. Este trabajo parte de la estrategia de búsqueda bibliográfica para profundizar en el conocimiento de las propiedades de la plata, su mecanismo de acción, efectos nocivos y factores asociados a su uso en investigaciones publicadas entre los años 2007 y 2017, seleccionándose finalmente un total de 23 artículos. Los resultados obtenidos dirigen el interés hacia las capacidades antimicrobianas y antiinflamatorias de la plata, reduciendo los signos y síntomas de infección e inflamación de las heridas, así como, la carga bacteriana. Se concluye, que la plata es un agente eficaz en el tratamiento de este tipo de heridas y destaca la necesidad por parte de los profesionales de la Enfermería de conocer el adecuado manejo de los apósitos de plata para su aplicación en la cura de heridas crónicas.
The increasing prevalence of chronic and difficult to manage wounds in the population in recent years has prompted the search for and study of the different treatment alternatives available for the management of this condition. Silver has been postulated as an effective agent for the treatment of wounds of this type due to its antimicrobial capacity and low toxicity. This work is based on the bibliographic search strategy to deepen the knowledge of the properties of silver, its mechanism of action, harmful effects and factors associated with its use in researches publised between 2007 and 2017, finally selecting a total of 23 articles. The results obtained direct the interest towards the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory capabilities of silver, reducing the signs and symptoms of infection and inflammation of wounds, as well as the bacterial load. It concludes that silver is an effective agente in the treatment of this type of wound and highlights the need for nursing professionals to know the proper maagement of silver dressings for application in the healing of chronic wounds.
