Issue Date: | 2009 | Abstract: | In view of the depleted natural population of the Canarian mussel Perna perna L., mainly due to overfishing and a high demand on the local market, its culture, could be a further challenge for local aquaculture. Besides, there is a public interest in developing the culture techniques of this species to contribute to the recovery of wild populations. A pilot study assessing the feasibility of mussel culture on Norwegian SmartFarm system, at sea, has just started on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands).
