Abstract: In view of the depleted natural population of the Canarian mussel Perna perna L., mainly due to overfishing and a high demand on the local market, its culture, could be a further challenge for local aquaculture. Besides, there is a public interest in developing the culture techniques of this species to contribute to the recovery of wild populations. A pilot study assessing the feasibility of mussel culture on Norwegian SmartFarm system, at sea, has just started on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). The aim of this report is to describe the site selection process as well as the planning and the installation of this fully operational pilot scale SmartFarm system, pioneer in Spain.
