Las imágenes como fuente histórica para el estudio del consumo del tabaco. La pintura flamenca y holandesa del siglo XVII

Abstract

En este texto utilizamos los cuadros de los pintores flamencos y holandeses del siglo XVII, auténticos revolucionarios en la cultura de la imagen, para acercarnos a las pautas de consumo del tabaco en el mundo atlántico. Consideramos que estamos ante un asunto relevante dentro de la pintura de costumbres. Holanda y Flandes se adelantaron en este sentido al resto de Europa. En esta aproximación establecemos una tipología de los usos del tabaco en el siglo XVII siguiendo a los artistas de Holanda y Flandes, teniendo muy presente el marco histórico general que sitúa a Holanda a la cabeza de las finanzas y de la distribución comercial en el llamado Siglo de Oro holandés.

The work of Flemish and Dutch painters of the seventeenth century, authentic revolutionaries in the culture of the image, is used in this text to characterize the patterns of tobacco consumption in the Atlantic world. It is our opinion that this kind of paintings should be considered a relevant subgenre within the paintings dealing with routine manners. Moreover, Holland and Flanders promoted this subgenre prior to its neighboring European territories. By the historical assessment of various paintings from Flemish and Dutch artists, a typology of the uses of tobacco in the seventeenth century is proposed, taking into consideration the historical framework that placed Holland at the head of the tobacco finance and commercial distribution in the so-called Century of Dutch gold.
