Las islas del azúcar: paisaje rural y agroindustria en las descripciones de Giulio Landi y Thomas Nichols

Abstract

The analysis of the description of the Italian traveler Giulio Landi, compared to that of the British merchant Thomas Nichols, allowed us to reconstruct the rural landscape ante agro-industrial sugar activity in the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Canary Islands during the 16th century. The narrative heritage contained in these historical geography resources allows us to understand the meaning of their cultural and social climate at the time, as a mirror of the shared values and perceptions. As agricultural spaces that stimulated the Portuguese and Castilian economies, the sugar islands proved to be fertile land for the strengthening of the lucrative market, with its socio-economic, technical and ecosystem repercussions. From this perspective, we situate the present work within the historiography of the first sugar cycle of the Atlantic Islands, where both texts represent a novelty.

El análisis de la descriptio del viajero italiano Giulio Landi, comparada con la del comerciante británico Thomas Nichols, nos ha permitido reconstruir el paisaje rural y la actividad agroindustrial azucarera en los archipiélagos atlánticos de Madeira y Canarias durante el siglo XVI. El patrimonio narrativo contenido en estos documentos de geografía histórica es un recurso que permite entender el sentido del lugar en el clima cultural y social de la época, espejo de sus valores y percepciones compartidas. Espacios agrícolas dinamizadores de la economía portuguesa y castellana, las islas azucareras se mostraron como terrenos fértiles para el afianzamiento del lucrativo mercado, con sus repercusiones socioeconómicas, técnicas y ecosistémicas. Desde esta perspectiva situamos el trabajo dentro de la historiografía del primer ciclo del azúcar de las islas atlánticas, donde ambos textos suponen una novedad.
