Resumen: Blood transfusion is a common clinical procedure that will be necessary throughout our professional life and which beginning its evolution approximately a century ago. In recent years, numerous blood groups have been found in the canine species, among which we can find DEA (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen), this being the first to be detected, DAL and KAI (being this last one he most recently discovered). In this way, this will be the first study carried out in the Canary Islands where the KAI 1/KAI 2 blood group is detected. In this study we will focus on the detection of DEA 1, with special importance when performing transfusions at the medical level, and the recently discovered KAI 1/KAI 2 groups, we will study the possibility of using this breed as a blood donor for other dog breeds or for itself and the proportion of blood groups DAI 1 and KAI 1/Kai 2 that this breed possesses. For this, we carry out a sampling in the native species of the Podenco Canario on the island of Gran Canaria and we will study the results obtained compared with the latest studies carried out in the United States, different European countries and our country focusing on one of the most pioneering studies carried out on the island of Ibiza with the Podenco Ibicenco breed and studies carried out on Canary Islands. Once all the samples had been analyzed and the results obtained, the data were processed to obtain the proportion of the DEA 1 and KAI 1/KAI 2 groups of the entire sampled population. The results in relation to the DEA 1 group show that this breed is not the most optimal for donating blood to other dogs, but it is for donating blood to their own breed. The results related to the KAI 1/KAI 2 group were similar in the entire population sampled, probably due to the geographical location of the island and the use of a pure breed for the study.
